Falcons to remain in downtown ATL?

Forget the point about politicians having something better to do than worry about the Falcons, the Georgia Dome, or both. If you put that issue aside for a moment I am happy to see that some folks are actively working to keep the Falcons downtown.

State Rep. Mark Burkhalter (R-Johns Creek) is sponsoring HB 903, which would move the sunset date of the taxes, currently pegged at 2020, to 2045. The bill also stipulates that the extension is contingent upon keeping the Falcons on the campus of the state-operated Georgia World Congress Center, the Dome’s current home.

The article goes on to say that the Falcons are part of the overall Atlanta package/experience, so keeping the Falcons downtime is vital to the economic prosperity of the City of Atlanta.

I am not sure about the last point, but as a longtime fan and (in recent years) season ticket holder, I like the current Georgia Dome location. I can get to game within 90 minutes, and while the parking situation is not ideal, if you pay for a pass to a decent lot, there are more than enough opportunities for a fun tailgating experience. If the Falcons moved north, it could (would) tack on an additional 30-60 minutes of driving time from Columbus depending on the ultimate location.

I know it is not all about me, but I want the Falcons to remain downtown. I am also not too crazy about a new stadium because I am sure that will result in PSL type deals, which may put season tickets out of my reach. If and when the Falcons do get a new stadium deal I hope they go with the retractable roof model. Georgia does not have a ton on inclement weather, but it would be nice to have the best of both worlds. Enjoy the fresh air and sunshine when the weather is nice, but close up things when it is nasty outside.

FIFA 10 Ultimate Team Feb 25

I just opened my latest propaganda email from EA, which announced the upcoming release of FIFA 10 Ultimate Team (FIFA UT) on February 10.

Coming February 25th to Xbox® LIVE & PSN!
Choose from over 7,500 players from 29 different leagues and build your squad of soccer superstars in this exciting new game mode! Once assembled, compete in dynamically updated tournaments online!

FIFA UT looks much deeper than the recent offering from Madden 10 Ultimate Team (MUT), but perhaps that is to be expected since FIFA UT will be a second generation product. The only concern I have is that the various videos only talk about online tournaments. Longtime readers know that I am not a big fan of random online opponents, but maybe FIFA UT will give me a reason to suck it up.

An additional concern is that FIFA UT is “pay to play” feature. I am already struggling to overcome my loathing of throwing real dollars at MUT, much less throwing money at an add-on feature for FIFA 10, which is being release within striking distance of 2010 FIFA World Cup. We all knew EA would go crazy this year with FIFA releases, but that is another article. My concern with the timing of the release FIFA UT is twofold. First, how long will EA support this mode? Maybe 7-8 months before this fall’s seasonal release of FIFA 11? Second, will FIFA UT have an active and enthusiastic user base considering that 2010 FIFA World Cup will be available in April?

Daily Dose of MUT – First Five Days

I am on a 2 game losing skid (Cleveland and Tampa Bay – yikes!), my team rating has dropped to 63, and my chemistry continues to plummet, typically hovering anywhere from 39-45. I am about to have 2-6 contracts expire, and I only have 397 coins in the bank.

Prior to MUT, I had not really played Madden 10 for weeks, so I am just now getting re-acclimated to the game. When I did play, it was always offline, and always with the Falcons (a low 80’ish rated team). The bottom line is that I am struggling with my 63-64 rated GA TX Falcons (pro skill level), but I am having fun.

As soon as I finish off another offline game on pro, I will once again have enough coins to pick up another Bronze pack, which will once again replenish my depleted team. My only issue here is that Silver packs are out of reach. By the time I get to 1500 coins, even with some use of the auction house, I may not be able to field a team, which makes saving for a Silver pack unreasonable.

After a week into this adventure I can so that it is possible to sustain a team without throwing real money at the game, but it begs the question – “is this really fun?”

I’ll answer my previous question by saying yes, however I wish I could earn enough coins to actually purchase a pack of Silver cards and not completely deplete my team. I could just suck it up and pay – $0.25 per Bronze pack, $0.50 per Silver pack, and $0.99 per Gold pack. All perfectly reasonable, and of course this is where EA hopes they can earn a few more dollars. In fact, I bet EA has a gold mine going thanks to MUT.

I came close to “funding” my team with real money last night, and to be perfectly honest I probably will over the weekend just so I can once again see what Madden is like with at least a 70’ish rated team.

FIFA 10 Ultimate Team

I missed out on last year’s FIFA, so my first experience with Ultimate Team was with Madden 10. I am so in love with MUT that I am really looking forward to FIFA UT, but it does suck that it is being offered as pay to play.

Test your skills as a player and manager to claim global football supremacy with FIFA 10 Ultimate Team, available to purchase for 400 Microsoft points or $4.99 as a download via Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network to FIFA 10 beginning this February, 2010. FIFA 10 and an internet connection is required for play.

I have not played FIFA 10 in months, but I am sure I will open it up this weekend to start getting familiar with the controls, play style, etc. I want to be able to hit the pitch running when UT is released in (hopefully) a few days.

U.S. Soccer Stars in the News …
It looks like Charlie Davies is on his way to making it back to the pitch in April, and hopefully to help Team U.S. to glory in this year’s World Cup.

In another bit of good news, Landon Donovan, currently on loan to Everton, picked up his first Premier League goal. It is always nice to see our boys doing well!

Falcons – Two More Random Mock Drafts

It is never too early to talk about mock drafts, and of course they are always a joy to read and critique. SI has the Falcons taking CB Kyle Wilson of Boise State with the 19th (or it could be 20th) selection.

The search for the draft’s No. 2-rated cornerback behind Florida’s Joe Haden at this week’s Senior Bowl turned up a surprising name, that of the former Bronco defensive back, Wilson. He has blanketed receivers on behalf of the North squad, and has made play after play on the ball. There’s no team that needs cornerback help more than Atlanta, and look for Wilson to continue to climb up teams’ draft boards.

There’s no doubt that the Falcons must get better in the secondary, but unless Kyle Wilson is going to start day one, shutting down half the field, this pick seems like it is a tad on the risky side. An improved pass rush would do wonders to protect the secondary, speaking of which …

This site has the Falcons turning to Florida DE Joe Haden.

Perhaps more than anything Atlanta needs a top-flight cornerback but Florida’s Joe Haden is going to be long, long gone by this point and after him there is a huge dropoff at the position. With that in mind the Falcons could turn their attention to Haden’s former Gator teammate, Carlos Dunlap.

I am all for second chances, but based on some recent off the field incidents, I cannot see the Falcons taking someone that may have any sort of character question marks.I do like where these two mock drafts take the Falcons – the secondary and defensive line must improve, significantly, right away.

MUT – Will Auctions Save My Soul?

When we last met I had 18 Madden Ultimate Team (MUT) contracts ready to expire and only ~500 coins in the bank. I started judiciously working the auction house; sell, sell, sell. I managed to get enough coins to buy another Bronze pack and still have ~270 coins remaining, but this is where I made my second mistake.

Early on in this journey I wrote that I lost valuable contracts when I quit a game during halftime of the Vikings/Saints NFC Championship game. That was my first mistake; even a loss earns you some coins. If you are gaming on the cheap, and do not want to throw real money at MUT, you need to complete all games. Earning something is better than nothing, especially when you consider that you really need some return on investment for burning contracts.

My second mistake was purchasing a pack of cards that put me over the 55 player card limit. Oops! I thought I would quickly recover by putting more cards up for auction, but no dice. Those are still considered part of your collection until they are sold, which makes sense or all the rich kids would seriously game the system.

I had to make some decisions on burning 5 cards. As my dad use to say “That really burns me up!” – yes, pun intended, but have to get in a reference to my dad when talking fantasy football, which is really an aspect of MUT.

After discarding those “extra” cards, using a couple of contract cards to extend what I consider valuable players (70s are good in my book), I have managed to put together a team that is rated 64, with a chemistry rating of 59. When I play my next game I will have 8 contracts expire, which is manageable, and I have two players with cards that expire in 2 games. Once again, I consider this manageable. To protect myself a little, I took about half of those contracts that are about to expire and lowered this on the depth chart. I actually had a chemistry of 39 before I mixed things up a little, so I will probably try to drop those cards in the auction later today.

This could play out a little better over my next 2-3 games. I still do not have the luxury of buying Silver packs; 1500 coins seems way out of reach. I do have $4 or so in my PSN bank, so I may finally do the needful and procure one Silver pack, just to get in on the fun of some better players. For now I am trudging a long, still mired in mediocrity, but loving the challenge of trying to build an “ultimate” team on the cheap.

Anyone interested in the Browns Home uniforms or a Jim Zorn card? I cannot give those away at Auction!

MUT on the brink …

So it has come to this. My Madden Ultimate Team (MUT) 3-4 GA TX Falcons is set to have 18 contracts expire after my next game. That is a lot of damage control that I have to figure out how to manage, and I only have ~500 coins and one contract extension in hand.

Last night, after beating the Redskins 12-7 in a very enjoyable game that earned me 290 coins (playing on Pro), I “purchased” (with earned coins) two Bronze packs – got a couple of offensive and defensive upgrades, one duplicate (K), two contract extensions, and San Diego Chargers Stadium.

This set of 24 new cards allowed me to put up several cards for auction. A Bronze scrub 50’ish Tampa Bay DE, the duplicate Bronze Tampa Bay K, the St. Louis Rams’ stadium, and a couple of others. Hopefully I can net at least 150 coins, which would allow me to buy a contract card or would be a little over 25% of the value of a Bronze pack.

The contract cards are ridiculous. As mentioned at the outset, I have a little over 500 coins, which means I could take my chances on another Bronze pack, buy 3 150 coin contract extensions, or start working the auction house and hopefully find a few deals to fill in the gaps. MUT is rough if you are not willing to spend real cash.

At this point I think the “safe” bet, but it may take a few nights to complete, is to work the auction house. I sold a Bronze Gibran Hamdan (QB Bills) card for 20 coins. The face value was 10 coins; I probably could have done better, but it is still early days of learning the system. I am sure there are other Bronze sub-50 coin deals to be had. Following this method, I could load up on 10-12 players that I actually need, which would only force me to toss 6-8 cards. I just don’t know if I want to commit myself to spending a ton of time working auctions just to field a mediocre team, and as stated numerous times I really do not want to spend cash.

I am afraid that if I do not field a proper team, and end up with John Parker Wilson (QB Falcons) at P, WR, or FF, I am going to be completely screwed. This will quickly turn a good experience into a non starter. Let’s be honest, the game has been fun, but I just do not believe that the economies work out for those of us that are average (at best) Madden players and do not want to spend real money.

I am going to have to make a decision today to see if I should toss $5 at the game. From the standpoint of paying a monthly subscription for something like WoW, this is not a total loss. I just cannot believe that I would commit money towards virtual cards that expire after a few games. The good news is that I am once again having a ton of fun with Madden; it’s been a while.

Injustice Reconciled – Roddy White is a Pro Bowler

I just read (J.Mike’s Missives) that Roddy White has been added to the Pro Bowl roster; who cares if he made it as an alternate replacement.

White finished 2009 with a team-high 85 catches, 1,153 yards and a career-high 11 touchdowns. He also joined wide receiver Andre Rison as the only other Falcon to post three-straight 1,000-yard seasons.

I do not care about the Pro Bowl, and do not plan to watch, but I am glad an Atlanta Falcon was recognized for a great year. Well done Roddy!

Madden Ultimate Team Contracts

I mentioned earlier that I was not sure if cards disappeared from your deck once their contracts hit 0 games remaining. I ran across this MUT FAQ earlier this morning.

– It’s a good idea to have some Contract Extension Cards on hand when your player contracts start running low. If you have players that are down to a single game contract, the next time you exit a game they will expire.

– At that point, you’ll be asked to extend the contract before the player is removed from your team. If you are out of contract cards at that point, you’ll lose the player whose contract has expired.

That sort of makes sense; you can wait until the bitter end, but you better have enough contract extensions (of the right card type – Bronze, Silver, Gold, etc) on hand to extend anyone you want to keep around.

The FAQ also has some useful information on how team chemistry affects your overall ratings during a game.

Madden Ultimate Team Dilemma

As I write this, my GA TX Falcons are a paltry 2-4, I have ~1200 coins, and most of my original starter pack players are down to two contracts.

I did buy (with earned coins, not real money) one Bronze pack yesterday, but it was done right pathetic. The pack only amounted to two player upgrades, a d-lineman from the Carolina Panthers, and QB Josh Johnson. It is arguable that Johnson is much of an upgrade over Marc Bulger, who I received in my original starters pack. I also got a contract card, which will allow me to extend 4 Bronze players. The card will also extend some other card types, but those other types do not apply to my piss poor team!

So here I am slogging my way to my version of an “ultimate” team. I have read if you do not extend contracts, those cards “disappear” from your deck, rather than going inactive waiting to be renewed or discarded. I hope that is not the case!

At this point, without spending money, the most I can hope to accomplish is to diddle away with a 60-ish rated team. If I play two more game I will once again have enough for a Silver pack; possibly in one more game if I manage to win and get enough coins. The downside is that the vast majority of my players’ contracts will expire leaving me with a group of cards that cannot field a team.

I could buy two more Bronze packs, and hope to get some decent players that can buy me a little time on my depth chart. Based on my first experience, I doubt this route will be worthwhile, but if I get two more contract extension cards I will be able to extend around 12 cards, which means I will have a chance to continue to field a team and I will still have ~200 coins in the bank with two more games. After I play two more games, some of the contracts will expire, but I will once again have enough coins on hand to buy another Bronze pack. Hip, hip, horary! [BTW, that is sarcasm.]

Ultimate Team Ideas
Maybe if I were better at Madden 10 I would be able to earn a little more coins per game and be able to mix in a Silver pack every once in a while with my Bronze packs. That would actually be fun because my team would get a little better, and I would have a chance to get a few players that could upgrade my team and maybe even a card or two that I could flip in the auction house.  You need coins to make more coins.

Once you start, you do not get a “do over” – so if you struggle while learning the game, you are screwed. As I mentioned yesterday, I got disconnected and I decided to quit a game, which amounts to burning two (at this point) valuable contracts, and it means that I am down anywhere from 400-500 coins (or almost a Bronze pack).

It would help if Bronze cards had longer contracts, or 15-20 game contracts were included with cards from your original starter pack. Instead you start off with 10 game contracts, which does not leave any fudge factor for those of us new to the game.

It would also be nice if you could earn more points for certain statistics or milestones. Some of this compensation is already included, but it would be helpful to have more opportunities to earn more coins. Multiple sacks, interceptions, returning interceptions or kickoffs/punts for TDs, length of a play, etc. All would be opportunities to earn more coin, and the system could even be scaled to favor lower ranking teams. In other words, a 60-69 rated team would get more coins for these achievements compared to a 90+ rated team. That would help level the playing field.

Of course this is a free add-on late in Madden 10’s lifecycle. It is meant to be a cash cow (some gamers will drop a ton of money towards cards) and a proving ground for Madden 11, but it would be nice to have a few tweaks now vs. waiting for the brand new (and improved) MUT upgrade this August.

I do not care about online play, rankings, and leader boards, but I would like to have a chance to actually improve without spending real money. I think the economy of MUT may require some real money to be spent to build your foundation. I guess I will see if I crash and burn in a couple of games.

My approach will probably be to play one more game – either the Bucs or Rams, the only two teams I have beaten – and then decide if I should go with 2 Bronze packs, 3 Bronze packs, or maybe even go with a Silver pack, and spend a dollar of real money from some Bronze packs to fill out my depth charts. Lord I hope I did not just say spend real, cold hard cash.

Madden Ultimate Team – Additional comments after first few games.

My Madden Ultimate Team (MUT) pretty much sucks; still using my default starter pack team which may in some small way contribute to my awful record. I am currently 1-3, but have burned 6 contract cards. In other words, I only have enough cards left for 4 more games. That may not be entirely true, since I probably have not used all my starter set cards in all my games.

Why the discrepancy? One game I was disconnected; the server message said I would not get charged, but nonetheless I think I was still hit for a contract.

I did quit another game because halftime of the Vikings/Saints was over; I thought halftime would last longer than a regular season game, but I digress. Besides, I felt like I was getting a total cheese job from the Lions, so why waste my time to finish up such a dreadful game experience?

This brings me to another point. You know things are pretty bad with my default team when I am getting killed by the likes of the Detroit Lions. Detroit was up on my 21-0 in the first quarter with a whopping 51 seconds of total possession time. Three scores; one pick-six, one bomb where my players could not tackle the receiver, and one long run where once again my players could not tackle worth a damn. In my dotage I would do a rewind on some of these plays because I felt like they were total garbage. I do not have enough free time to feel like I am getting completely clowned by the CPU!

The one game I won was a FG fest; 9-3 against Tampa Bay. The only reason I won was because I went into completely clock management mode and attempted to protect my meager lead. This started when I was up 6-3, so that says it all!

That is not to say things are all bad; I actually like the concept and enjoy a decent (non stressful challenge). I am just not sure that I will have the patience to keep this up.

From my experience with the game, the more points you score, the less you give up and whether you win or lose the game are the biggest determining factors as to how many points you earn. Even if you lose and score 7-10 points a game, you will be rewarded with roughly 200 coins. With new card packs that include upper-echelon players costing 3,000 coins, some may find the task of building a team without resorting to spending real money a chore.

I don’t play Madden 10 online, and I don’t think I will start online MUT anytime soon, but at some point that may be better than getting beat over and over again by the CPU. Right now I am not interested in paying “real” money to upgrade my team, but if I want to be well represented online, it sounds like spending cold hard cash is the only way to survive.

Another issue is that this is obvious just a monetization effort for EA, by charging for player cards, EA stripped the skill out of this mode. All I need to do is spend $20 and I can instantly buy the Ultimate Team, which is very lame.

Where to from here? I have 1100 or so coins and most of my “good” players (OK, they are starters, but that does not make them good) only have 4 games left. Not sure what happens when you actually run out of players. I’ll either have to buy more Bronze packs, or watch my team get really bad (I can’t imagine being any worse!).

I really wanted to hold out and save for a Silver pack (1500), but I bet I end up having to go with a couple of Bronze packs (500) just to have enough players to field at each position. No doubt that Gold and Platinum packs are beyond my capabilities.

Of course MUT is only a few weeks old, but I am not sure if the developers considered the economy for average (to subpar) Madden gamers, that do not cheat, use money plays, try to trick the system, etc. I play for realistic statistics, and since I suck, I am mired in mediocrity.

Vikings Turnover NFC Championship to Saints

If I were a fan of the Vikings I would be pretty upset this morning. As an anti Saints fan, I am none too happy. The better team, at least on this particular Sunday did not win.

I guess for the next couple of weeks I am going to be a Colts fan. The early odds have put the Colts as 4.5-5 point favorites. Not sure if today is a Happy Monday kind of day, but Sunday was a great day of football, featuring two exceptional playoff matches.

Madden Ultimate Team First Impressions

At the risk of being told that I am talking to the south end of a north bound mule, or being called an EA Sports mouthpiece tool, I created my Madden Ultimate Team – “GA TX Falcons” (creatively yours, the Georgia Texas Falcons).

I have read all the negative opinions about this new “free” mode, but I find it somewhat interesting. It has the potential of being a very nice diversion. I doubt I will spend money buying cards, but I can certainly see the allure. If you are not good at Madden (raises hand), it is a little frustrating starting off with such a mediocre group of players.

After opening my starter pack, I was greeted with a piss poor group of players (and cards). I get the yucky Brown home colors when playing at the St. Louis Rams’ Edward Jones Dome, and the Redskins road whites. How bland can you get? I get a run heavy offense, and the Detroit Lions defensive play book. My team is QB’ed by none other than Marc Bulger. Jack Del Rio coaches my rag-tag set of cards.

Needless to say, the early going looks to be tough. Remember, I raised my hand when I said I was not very good at Madden? It is not as if I do not know how to play; I am just getting too old to press all the buttons in record time. I need to remember to turn off “fight for the fumble” one of these days; I never mass the buttons fast enough to win a scrum.

For my first game I took on Tampa Bay, which happens to be the default rival team for my Atlanta Falcons. I thought I was in high cotton after I took a 14-0 lead, but somehow (thanks to three turnovers) I gave up 17 unanswered points in a disappointing loss. For my second game I intentionally looked for a weak team, but still lost to the Chiefs 31-24.

The only good news is that I managed to get enough cards (just over 550 I believe) to buy a Bronze pack of cards, but I decided to wait since it was time for the start of the Jets/Colts game. BTW, the Jets just went up 14-6 with just under 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, but I digress.

It takes a lot these days to get me gaming, so it will be interesting if Ultimate Team continues to provide some appeal. I want to get in another couple of games tonight, and I have to decide if I am going to waste 500 points on some Bronze cards, or if I should just grind my way to a pack of Silver cards. At the rate I am going, I should be able to pick up a pack of Silver cards in another 3-4 games. Not sure what happens when all the contracts run out.

Sunday Stuffs

Here are a few random links for your viewing pleasure that I came across while surfing the web this morning. As I heard on SportingNews radio, legitimate web surfing; in other words it is too early on Sunday morning to be looking for some T&A.

After the affair ends …
A reminder for married folks to be careful who they jilt after the sex factor comes to an end.

YaVaughnie Wilkins posted the signs after she learned that her lover, Charles E. Phillips — president and director of the tech conglomerate Oracle Corporation and a member of Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board — had reconciled with his wife, the New York Post reported.

The billboards — there are three in New York and one apiece in Atlanta and San Francisco, where Phillips lives — may have cost Wilkins up to $250,000, at an estimated $50,000 each.

After the billboards surfaced, Phillips fessed up to his longtime affair through a spokesman on Thursday.

The again this one probably only applies to rich folks. I am sure Tiger can relate.

Miranda Kerr
OK, so I lied about not having enough coffee to look for T&A, but by golly wow is Miranda beautiful! I did come across this one while taking in my daily dose of morning Fox news; we can chalk this up as legitimate.

Cheers to beer in a can!
I had no idea that canned beer has been around for 75 years! It’s nice to learn something new before 7AM.

Team US F1 looks not so American
While I am excited about the prospects of a U.S. based F1 team, I am disappointed to learn that the first driver announced is not an American.

AUTOSPORT reports that former grand prix ace Carlos Reutemann, a close friend of US F1 boss Peter Windsor and now a leading politician in Argentina, has been instrumental in putting the funding package together for Lopez, who will receive a degree of government backing alongside other Argentinian sponsors.

I have nothing at all against Jose Maria Lopez; I hope he shows well for US F1, but it sort of sucks that an American could not put together a funding package. Then again, Lopez has the full backing of the Argentina government! Maybe President Obama and his socialist agenda should considering jumping into racing. Why not inject some cash into NASCAR, IRL, and US F1?

Happy NFL Championship Sunday!

NFL Championship Sunday

This is the glorious day that the Lord has made – for Championship football! Not much has changed since I wrote about the AFC and NFC Championship games last Monday. The Colts and Saints are still favored, but there seems to be a ton of momentum from the pundits that favors the Jets in an upset over the Colts.

Colts over the Jets
I really do not see the Jets pulling this one out, but the reasoning from the so called “experts” is that Rex Ryan’s defenses are so damn complicated, that the Jets are going to confuse Peyton Manning with various blitz packages. I think that logic is flawed, and while the game may be close, the Cots win. Maybe not cover, but win nonetheless. Besides, even if this one is a low scoring game, the Falcons and Matt Ryan beat the Jets in a “must win” game for the Jets, and Atlanta (like a lot of other teams) made Mark Sanchez look like a rookie. The Colts will do the same.

Vikings over the Saints
Besides wanting the Vikings to upset the Saints, I think they will for a couple of reasons. First, the Falcons easily exposed the Saints – their defense cannot handle a decent rushing attack. Second, the Vikings defense should put pressure on Brees; of course he is capable of handling pressure, but I think Brees will be forced into a mistake or two which may make a difference in this high scoring game. The X Factor here may be Percy Harvin; if he is out, Minnesota will have a difficult time winning.

Regardless of the winners, I expect two great football games; cannot wait to crack open a bottle of Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout to enjoy on this nasty stormy day.
