Harry Douglas out for the year with torn ACL.

It is a bummer of a news day to read that the Falcons budding young WR Harry Douglas is out for the year with a torn ACL. I know it is not the same thing, but I watched my wife go through the whole “replace an ACL” thing a year and a half ago; not a pretty picture. According to ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas

The news Thursday morning that wide receiver Harry Douglas is out for the season is devastating. It comes as Roddy White’s contract holdout has no apparent end in sight. The Falcons had big plans for Douglas.

He was working with the first team in White’s absence. Even if White returned, Douglas was going to be no worse than a very active third receiver. Now, the Falcons don’t really have a first or third receiver.

I guess Roddy has a little more contract leverage. Hope they get him into camp soon, and best wishes to Harry on a speedy recovery.

4E Player’s Handbook (initial comments)

I started perusing the Player’s Handbook (PHB) and had a couple of immediate comments. First, what happened to “roll 3d6 six times, in order, apply the scores?” Second, what the heck is going on with the lack of evilness and the pre allocated deities? Finally, Dragonborn?

But I want to roll my stats!
The 4E Player’s Handbook presents three different methods of determining your ability score, and for veterans of the game, two of the three methods are kind of head scratchers. I am sure working a standard array brings some sibilance of balance to the game, but all the different ways to roll scores in 1st Edition are gone. Maybe it is just me misremembered good ‘ol days; going to take a while to get use to the new ways of ability score generation. To be fair, the 4d6 method is still included, but with some caveats. Who wants terms and conditions around rolling the dice? We all know that you just throw away the numbers if they completely suck, right? Oops.

Of course I can do whatever the heck I want, and allow any sort of ability score generation method that I would like to implement. I may wreck havoc on game balance, so I will continue reading before making any catastrophic decisions. I bet a future supplement adds some other variants.

Say goodbye to evil
I can understand that playing evil characters is no longer encouraged. 4E looks to be heroic “us vs. them” action at its finest. Alignments are now more or less slanted towards “good” and “lawfulness.” I still like the idea of playing chaotic good or maybe lawful neutral characters. Maybe that is in the later parts of the book, the Dungeon Master’s Guide (DMG), or some other supplement. I really do not like the idea of including deities, complete with backgrounds, right in the PHB; it more or less forces you to make some assumptions about your gaming world (or at least the one your DM sets up).

Dragonborn
I really do not get the Dragonborn thing as a player character. I mean to say that I really do not like the idea of Dragonborn characters running rampant.

I can appreciate that this is a fantasy game. I can accept the idea of a human village that has a dwarf blacksmith, a halfling baker, and the occasional almost anything else race that passes through town. Rumors of elves in the nearby forest? Mixed party of adventures that stay in the inn? I can live with all of this because this is a fantasy game. With that said, there is no way on God’s Green Earth that you are going to convince me that the town folks do not totally freak out when a Dragonborn abomination strolls through the marketplace. To make matters worse is the background material which states

“Long ago, their empire contended for worldwide dominion, but now only a few rootless clans of these honorable warriors remain to pass on their legends of ancient glory.”

Give me a f’ing break. Not in my campaign. Breath weapons of acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison? Sounds like a monster, not a PC.

Moving on …
So far I am happy with what I have read in the PHB. I think really like the d20 mechanics, but of course have not actually tried them on a dry run to see how they actually work. I doubt I will remember all the various modifiers, bonuses, and the like, but all in all, the base rules look straight forward and, on the surface, easy to understand.

Oh yeah, WTF is a Tiefling?

First PSP Go review?

T3 gives the yet to be released PSP Go 3 stars (out of 5). The article pretty much tells you everything that you have already read here and elsewhere, but there is a brief two minute video of the PSP Go in use with a rather attractive host. I guess that is something.

If you’ve got a big UMD library, you might want to wait and see what Sony offers existing PSP users. It’s hinted that it will bring in some kind of sweetener for anyone trading in their old PSP and assures us that most of the back catalogue will be available for download – presumably for free if you already own the relevant UMDs. The ideal would be some sort of software to convert your UMDs for Go play, but as that would raise all manner of piracy “issues” for Sony, don’t hold your breath.

For me this is still the open question about the PSP Go. How is Sony going to help out owners those owners that have a decent library of UMD games? If necessary, I can sell my PSP-1000 on eBay; I do not need that to be part of some special trade-in deal unless the deal is too good to pass up. What about the UMDs? I guess we will have to wait a little longer to see how Sony responds.

T&A Thursday Features PS3 Porn (sort of).

T&A Thursday returns with a little porn action for the PS3 courtesy of kotaku.

Japan’s DDM.tv is bringing on-demand Blu-ray quality HD adult movies to the PLAYSTATION 3.

The service requires a broadband connection, an HDMI cable and, obviously, a PS3 console — the only device the service works with presently.

Yeah. I think this is only in Japan, but where there is a will there is a way. I’m just saying. Read the article’s comments; some of them are screwed up.

White wants Fitzgerald money.

According to the ajc contract talks with Roddy White are not going very well.

White, who is under contract for the 2009 season, wants a contract in the financial neighborhood of Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald, who recently signed a four-year $40 million deal. The Falcons apparently are not willing to go that high.

As I wrote over the weekend, I think it is fair to make a case that White should get Top 10 WR money, but I just cannot see Fitzgerald money. If I were White I would try to get everything I could too, but he also needs to be somewhat realistic. In another year or two he may be considered a Top 3 receiver, but until he starts matching Fitzgerald reception-for-reception and TD-for-TD I hope White’s camp does not do something completely stupid.

With that said, this article make the case that White is actually statically comparable to Fitzgerald over the last couple of years. I would make the case that Fitzgerald has been much more consistent over his five years vs. White’s four years.

For Falcons fans there is some good news. It looks like Atlanta does have some leverage in contract negations.

The Falcons do have some leverage in that White could eventually cave and play without a new deal — and be tagged with a franchise tender next season or sign a long-term deal at some point before then. Should the NFL and the NFLPA not complete a new labor pact, making the 2010 season an uncapped year, White also would be a restricted free agent because he has less than six years of service. That would allow Atlanta to cripple his mobility by requiring interested teams to give up at least a first-round pick in order to sign him.

I hope this one does not get ugly.

OOTP10 Demo available.

In case you missed the last couple of $10 off sales, and you are still interested in giving OOTP10 a try, a full-featured demo has been released.

A demo version of OOTP 10 is now available, so now you truly have no excuse not to give us a try! The demo version is valid for 7 real-world days, one-and-a-half seasons of fictional play, or one-half season of historical play. Aside from these limitations, the demo version is fully functional. No features are limited in our demo!

I actually missed the first two sales, so I hope to have time to give the demo a try. I enjoyed past versions of the game, but for whatever reason have not committed to this one.

Spinning the numbers. EA revenue by gaming platform.

Another day, another game of spin the numbers. This time MCV (via N4G) shows us that the PS3 outperforms Xbox 360 for EA.

Wii revenues lead the charge at $161m, up from $109m in the same quarter last year. Next up was PC, which courtesy of The Sims 3, bought in a considerable $124m.

Next in line was PS3 with total revenues of $121m, markedly higher than Xbox 360, which generated $73m for EA. The PSP was also a surprise victor over DS with revenues of $38m compared to DS’ $28m.

I guess you could say that is interesting, but it is funny that the lead was not Wii outshines other consoles, or maybe the PC kicks Sony and MS in the nuts.

Like a lot of articles I reference, be sure to check out the comments.  Sometimes (and this is the case with this article) the comments are better than the article.  Well … maybe more entertaining.

Will Sony announce a PS3 price cut August 18th?

I found this article from SMG (via N4G), which is a rare treat. Imagine a well-written, thought out article on the current state of the Big Three consoles, and how Sony plans to move up the rankings.

And while a cheaper Xbox 360 was unable to halt the Wii’s advance, any gamer worth his salt faced with a choice between the Wii and the Playstation 3 knows that Sony delivers the most consistently reviewed video games and versus a console with no media playback abilities or high definition support, the fully featured Playstation 3 would certainly be the savvy consumers choice for the best bang for your home entertainment buck. Add to this the impending launch of Sony’s more advanced motion capture controllers that were in development long before Nintendo’s Wii-mote and suddenly even Nintendo should start looking over its shoulder.

I do not necessarily agree with all points in the article, but like I said in the opening, this is a nice article and definitely worth a read.

Gran Turismo PSP Pre-order deal. Or is it?

It looks like Sony is going to offer some sort of pre-order deal for folks that order/reserve Gran Turismo (PSP).

Pre-order Gran Turismo, and you’ll get a voucher that will add one of the top cars to your in-game collection of cars in an exclusive color. This means that on day one, you’ll be able to smoke your friends in 4-player Ad Hoc Mode multiplayer races with one of these rare sports cars while they are just getting started saving up credits.

This begs several questions. The article mentions several different cars including 1974 Lamborghini Countach LP400. Does this mean you get a different car depending on where you pre-order? If yes, I hate that sort of crap. What about digital distribution? Do PSP Go owners get hosed?

I am not sure what the sell through ratio will be for this game, but I imagine that there will be lots and lots of online users racing with one of these exclusive cars. Have at it cowboys!

There was one interesting comment about digital pre-orders …

Hopefully you guys have something special for those of us purchasing the PSPgo and buying the PSN version. Right?

Stephanie Yoshimoto replied on August 4, 2009 at 4:07 pm

Yes. For those who are planning to purchase Gran Turismo from the PlayStation Network as a download, we will be able to share our plans for you shortly, but rest assured you are not forgotten.

In other words, they do not really have a clue how this is going to work. Oops.

Here come the PSP Go accessories.

BTW, is it a PSP Go or PSPgo? I have seen both designations, but continue to use PSP Go until I see something contradictory from Sony, but I digress. Gaming Bits has a brief article on some of the PSP Go accessories.

If you’re getting the PSPgo, you should at least consider a Micro M2 Memory Stick and Screen Protective Film. Another couple of accessories you may want to consider is an output cable for displaying PSPgo media on your TV and a cradle for placing the PSPgo on while at your desktop. See the products with links to the items for pre-ordering below, as well as what is and isn’t included with the PSPgo system.

Assuming that I get a PSP Go, I am not sure that I will pick up a M2 stick for day one use, but screen protection is a must.

Wii Sports Resort and Wii MotionPlus enabled controllers.

I picked up Wii Sports Resort for the kids Sunday. They seem to enjoy it, but I have not had time to give some of the new games a try myself. Curiously enough, the game requires you have use the Wii MotionPlus accessory if you are going to have concurrent multiplayer gaming sessions.

If you only have the bundled Wii MotionPlus controller adaptor, multiple player gaming is limited to turn based gaming (you first, then me, then you, etc). I did not check things out to see if that was actually the case, so it is possible that my kids swindled me into ordering another Wii MotionPlus accessory from Amazon, which will arrive today.

I hope to have some time later this week to see how the games play. I am looking forward to basketball, archery (because that seems cool), and to compare how the new bowling game plays vs. HVA (PS3). I know that Wii Sports Resort is just a bunch of mini games, but much like Wii Sports my wife is already playing this one with the kids. I have childhood memories of my dad playing some Colecovision games with us, and my step father playing the various Intellivision sports games, but my mother never stepped up to the TV. Strong days indeed that my wife plays the Wii. Casual gaming has truly arrived.

Back to pencil and paper gaming (D&D 4E Monster Manual Impressions)

On a drunken tangent I decided to order the latest Dungeons and Dragons rules, along with a handful of supplements. I have to admit that at the time I ordered I was not as drunk as I may have wished, and it really was not much of a tangent. I am a lifelong RPG fan, mostly of the D&D and AD&D variants, but it has been years since I actually played the game. That would be back in the AD&D 1st Edition rules days, with maybe some D&D Rules Cyclopedia (i.e. Basic, Expert, Champions, Masters, and Immortals – 1991) mixed in during college.

I have always enjoyed reading the rules and various supplements. At the very least I used to do a decent job keeping up with the changes. Even if I did not play I would purchase the occasional Dragon Magazine to see what was going on in the world of AD&D. I am even proud to say that I made a decent amount of money by buying materials, reading them, storing the stacks of goodies away for a later date, and eventually selling “rare” merchandise on eBay.

Most of that buying and flipping on eBay ended shortly after the release of the 3E rules. I pickup up the core books, some Forgotten Realm supplements, and that was basically that for a long period of time. To be honest 3.5E came and went, and until recently I had no idea that Dragon Magazine was digital only, and that a new hope – 4E – was now upon us.

While I am in no hurry to play regularly or join a group, I am trying to talk my kids into playing. Their only experience with the game comes from the old campy cartoons – yes, like every good gamer born in the early 70’s, I have those fun cartoons on DVD. D&D to the kids is watching me playing some WoW [I know, technically not D&D], and playing a handful of video games such as Champions of Norrath for the PS2. I think the kids need to be educated, and D&D could be an interesting family game night experience. My wife said she was willing to try if I could explain things and keep it fairly simple. If I can convert her to being a fan of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings then there may be some hope down this avenue of pencil and paper gaming.

I decided to place an order from Amazon for the Dungeons and Dragons Core Rulebook Gift Set, 4th Edition and a handful of supplements that I will discuss later. Maybe. Depends on how much this holds my interests with other competition for my time – mainly football season is about to start. For what it is worth, this core gift set is actually $3.09 cheaper than ordering the three core books individually; go figure.

I am not going to profess that I am a game rules/mechanics expert, or even a decent reviewer of D&D books, but I plan to write a few observations on some of this new 4E material. We can see where this takes us.

4E Monster Manual Initial Impressions
Don’t ask me why, but I decided to pick up the 4E Monster Manual (MM) first. My initial impressions are pretty simple. What happened to treasure types, and why are there so few lower level monsters?

I assume treasure listings are located in the Dungeon Master’s Guide (DMG), and I can also assume that I can actually read the Player’s Handbook (PHB) to learn some of the mechanics and what the various statistics box listings mean. To be fair, the MM does contain a four-page glossary of terms, so help is probably only a few minutes away.

After getting past the mechanics stuff, my very next impression was that some of the descriptions were really brief? What happened to the detailed monster descriptions? I may be in the minority, but I really enjoyed the “ecology of” series in Dragon Magazine.

I then took a second pass at the book at realized that some of the monster listings, in fact I would say a majority of the monster listings were fairly deep and well described. Maybe not to the ”ecology of” level of detail, but certainly enough for a DM to run with things. For example, there are seven pages dedicated to goblins and their ilk. Most of the descriptions also have a DC to determine if the characters learn some interesting information about the creature at hand. Of course since I am unfamiliar with 4E, I have no idea what DC means. Some of the descriptions state that a Nature, Religion, Arcana, or Dungeoneering check is needed to gain this information. I am sure I will figure it out at some point. For example, if you run into a Zombie, a successful Religion check of DC 15 will let your character learn “Most zombies are created using a foul ritual. Once roused, a zombie obeys its creator and wants nothing more than to kill and consumer the living.”

The MM also contains a four-page section on racial traits that allows DM to build out NPCs, and I suppose for players to give something different (i.e. humanoid monsters) as go.

I was disappointed in the four-page [that looks like a theme] monsters by level section. I suppose it is useful, but the old encounter tables would have been a nice addition.

This is really a minor quibble, but I was very surprised by the lack of low level monsters.  As I am writing this article I do not have the MM in front of me, but at most there were 15 1st level monsters, many of which were not unique (i.e. three different types of kobolds)  and less than 20 2nd level entries.  It just seems like a lack of low level variety, but I am sure additional supplements will be released that will help fill in the gaps.  I can always revert back to some of my older materials, but I bet it will be a major undertaking to convert from pre 4E to 4E equivalents.

For first impressions I was neither impressed nor disappointed. The MM seems to be a utilitarian rule book that serves its purpose – detailing monsters.

Speaking of football season.

The Falcons got their camp under way over the weekend, and UGA officially kicked things off today [or maybe it is tomorrow; would not be the first time I ever went early]. I am surprised one of the top questions in this article from the ajc was not about Cox’s ability to lead the team and hold down the QB spot. Assuming that Cox has the position nailed down (mostly because he is a fifth year senior) I think the tailback position is the next most intriguing.

Caleb King, once a celebrated recruit out of Gwinnett County, enters his third season in the Georgia program and gets his first shot at a starting job. Redshirted in 2007 and used sparingly as Moreno’s backup last season, King starts camp No. 1 on the tailback depth chart.

That’s not insignificant, but he will have to fend off competition from three teammates who weren’t in the mix during spring practice: Richard Samuel and Dontavious Jackson, both of whom were injured, and Washaun Ealey, who was still in high school. Plus, 5-foot-7 Carlton Thomas showed in the spring that he intends to command playing time, too.

This is a great time of year. Hope springs eternal for the Dawgs, and I just got my Falcons tickets. Good times!

I will be glad when the holiday buying season kicks off.

Early August has nothing video game related going on except waiting for the latest Madden release. There are plenty of articles out and about on id’s upcoming Rage: will it or will it not run like crap on the PS3? A few more PSP Go articles are trickling in, but all things considered, everything is very quiet right now.

At least my Falcons season tickets arrived today – that gives me something to look forward to in a few weeks!

Gran Turismo PSP – What about the racing?

As I read more and more info about the upcoming Gran Turismo for the PSP, I run across lots of info on the graphics, some on the physics, but nothing about the actual racing. This latest preview article from PSXExtreme is more of the same.

Moving on, upon approaching a PSP devkit running the game, somebody had left it with an Audi A3 running on the Tokyo course. I picked the unit up and immediately found myself dazzled at how phenomenal the game looks running on the PSP. Now, I will say that you shouldn’t buy into the hype that it looks like Gran Turismo 4, because it doesn’t. Ultimately, the PS2 is the stronger unit, so the PSP cannot do what its bigger brother can. On the other hand, the reason why people so often claim that the PSP game looks like GT4 is because its lighting most closely resembles that of the PS2 title. The cars have a very beautiful sheen to them, making their colors pop and look natural. As far as the textures are concerned, the cars are a very, very slight step below GT3, and for a handheld unit with a three-inch tall screen, that’s absolutely fantastic.

If the game is built on any of the previous GT titles then everyone knows what to expect. I will purchase it just because I am curious, and I have always been a fan of the series; even if the actual racing sucks.
