Arkham City and UC3 – Waiting for Future Days

Yesterday Amazon ran a lightning deal for Batman: Arkham City for just a tick under $29. I had it locked and loaded, but in the end, I figured WTF was wrong with me?

I have decided that I need to play and experience Batman Arkham Asylum: Game of the Year Edition first before tackling what looks to be the extraordinary Arkham City. When it comes to games, I say it often, but really mean it. There are just too many great games and not enough time to enjoy them. I actually received Arkham Asylum for a Christmas present. Last year. It has been in my TO-PLAY list ever since.

Same for Uncharted 3 – I still need to play the first Uncharted, which I started, but got distracted, and never got around to finishing. Same drill with UC2; would like to actually play it before tackling UC3. At least I cannot claim owning UC2, and letting it collect dust.

More on UC3 after Christmas …

  1. I picked up Madden 12 and Assassins Creed in the last couple of weeks (the latter for $10).

On Saturday, I was looking at a copy of UC3 for $30 at Best Buy and then thought there was no way to play all 3 in the near future. By the time I would get to UC3, it might be even cheaper so no point in buying now.

Instead, picked up Mad Men Blu-Ray box sets for $8.99 each per season.

Even without holiday sales, it looks like game prices are dropping quickly, as has been the case at the tail end of each generation, now with more talk of the next gen. coming soon (not only Nintendo but possibly Microsoft next year).

  2. There are a few exceptions where I buy something day one – sports games and racing games if I intend to play them “new.” JRPGs are also day one pick ups – if nothing else, I can flip them on eBay, especially collectors editions, for a nice profit.

For everything else, I just watch the blu-ray deal tracking and get games when they hit under a certain threshold: $19.99, $14.99, and $9.99 depending on the game. Even then, if I waited, I could probably go even cheaper …

    My current backlog is nuts.

The console watch is going to be interesting. I don’t see Sony making a move yet, not if they want to be successful with the Vita. Then again, they probably don’t want to be last to the market.

Nintendo will have to make a move because of poor results, but Wii U (or whatever it is called) really the next console? Seems to be more of a controller to me. Everyone wants the next GameCube, but Nintendo would probably be OK doing pretty much anything with HD and keeping to their core 1st party titles. The question this time will be if anyone jumps like they did for the Wii.

I see Microsoft not knowing what to do. If they launch too soon, gamers may decide to hold out to see what Sony and Nintendo will offer. If they wait too late, they could fall behind.

I’m really not sure what any of these guys can do that would make me want to spend another $299 (or whatever – price will be key this time) for a new console. At this point they can offer greater graphics/detail, but what else? 3D – not for me until we have quality 3D TVs without glasses. Motion – already been there and done that.

    Should be interesting.
