White Knight Chronicles International – Early Reviews Less Than Favorable

I’m closely watching White Knight Chronicles; call it research to justify a purchase. The first four reviews, not necessarily by my trusted regular reading sources, have rated the game with a ho-hum score of 69%. Although the critic score should receive a small bump later in the day when the metacritic editors realize there is an error with the GameRevolution review score (metacritic show 67%, but the actual review shows a “B-”).

It will be interesting to see how the RPG sites rate the game, and how the user votes compare to the critic review score.

White Knight Chronicles – Or how to piss off your fan base.

I still have not decided what to do with White Knight Chronicles International. I know if I purchase it I will not have enough time to play, or get my money’s worth. Besides there is that backlog of RPGs that I mentioned yesterday, but I digress.

This article from the “official” PlayStation Blog is sure to royally tick off some folks.

For those of you who are going to be investing significant time in your characters, there will be an option to remake them without having to start the game over by purchasing a special key through the PlayStation Store for only $4.99. This will allow you to redesign your avatar at any point and keep all that hard work you’ve put in intact. This feature will go live this Thursday on the PlayStation Store.

Ouch! I am sure it is considered innovative to change your character’s appearance mid-game, but charging almost $5 to make the change (and of course keep your current progression) is just a bit much. Oh well, with the cost of modern game development, I guess Sony has to figure out how to squeeze additional revenue sources from its games.

Still, I think it would have been better to wait on this announcement. Instead it sort of comes off as “F-you! We know you will pay anyway!”

MLB 10: The Show

I decided to pre-order MLB 10: The Show earlier tonight. Of course I used Amazon, which gives me release day delivery for a total of $56.99. No shipping, no tax, same day service, what a deal.

As part of the pre-order special, a bonus code will be made available, which will unlock six classic stadiums.

Pre-order MLB 10 The Show, for PS3, and gain access to six classic stadiums (Shibe Park, Forbes Field, Polo Grounds, Crosley Field, Sportsman’s Park and Griffith Stadium). Access code will be e-mailed within ten business days after the game releases. Offer valid when shipped and sold by Amazon.com, while supplies last. Limit one per customer.

With the newest installment of MLB on the way, plenty of FIFA action to be had (in the form of FIFA 10, the upcoming DLC Ultimate Mode, or 2010 FIFA World Cup), and of course Madden Ultimate Team action, I think I have sports games covered for the immediate future!

MUT – Cards from Heaven

Hmmm … I had to pack it in early from work today. A family emergency came up and I had to get home to take care of the kids; saying some prayers that everything turns out fine. Thankfully videogames offer us a nice diversion and temporary escape from real life.

I loaded up Madden 10 to check on my MUT auctions to see if I made a further dent in my march towards 1500 coins and my next Silver pack. I know; small potatoes to the experts, but I understand my limits.

Imagine my surprise that magically I had a Legendary Playoff Drew Brees card. MUT cards from Heaven? What sort of server mess up could cause such an issue? EA had schedule maintenance at 2PM EST, so I figured that a goof up was in order, but it looks like the Brees card was a free gift as part of the “Madden Ultimate Team 100k Challenge.”

This card’s coin value is listed at 1000, but on the PS3 the Legendary Playoff Drew Brees card is already being sold at low, low prices. I’ll probably keep the card around for another week or so and see if the prices go back up.

It was funny to plug in Brees and see my rating go from 73 to 80; tempting.

God of War III (March 16) – Still Sitting on the Fence

I wonder if I am the only PS3 owner in existence that is kind of lukewarm on GoW:III, which is being released March 16. I am sure it is going to be the next great “all that and a bag of chips” game of the year experience, but I doubt I would come close to getting my money’s worth.

The days of buying everything on release day, just for the experience, are for the most part a thing of my past. Besides, I suck at this type of button pressing, real time strategic, action adventure game. Also, I never got around to playing GoW:I, much less GoW:II, but I saw in the Sunday paper that this week Best Buy has a deal for me – GoW Collection, complete with pretty HD graphics for only $29.99. In fact, I think it is now generally available at this new low, low price. Joy!

Twisted, DS, and MUT Chemistry

February is here, with promises of great Super Bowl Sunday football (Lord I hope for a Colts victory), V-Day and inappropriate lingerie (keeping my fingers crossed), the start of a new NASCAR season, and yes of course, a brand new month for me to rehash old videogames. Yes, I am a broke bloke.

PS3 Gets Twisted
Over the weekend PlayStation LifeStyle ran an article that sort of, kind of, hinted (hopefully confirmed) that a re-boot of Twisted Metal is on the way. Twisted Metal 1 and 2 are still all-time favorites. Not so much with the others, but Black was a distant third.

Silly rabbit, DS is for kids!
In Retrospective: Listen, We Have to Talk, EuroGamer writer John Walker waxes and wanes about the dark days of mass market gaming on the DS. This is a great read, and any gamers with kids will be sure to appreciate how far the DS has fallen. Sure, there are still some gems to be found, if you can escape the sticky sweet goo from all the “my pretty pink princess pony pet shop” games.

MUT Chemistry
I dedicated time to eight Madden Ultimate Team (MUT) articles last week, so it would be a major contradiction to start off a new month without another daily dose of MUT. This time I will keep it brief.

In theory your team can be much better than the ratings indicate. How? By playing around with something called chemistry, and while I have a BS in Mathematics, I usually looked at the hot chick’s ass in chemistry class.

As you can tell from past MUT articles, I have not had time to concentrate on building a team with any sort of chemistry; instead I have concentrated in survival. If I could build a decent base, I could turn my attention towards my chemistry rating, but for now that seems to be a way off.

The good news is that just by playing around with my depth chart I was able to improve my chemistry several points (to 59), hopefully allowing me to put off a few contracts from expiring for another two or three games.

As mentioned yesterday, right now my MUT strategy is threefold and fairly simple. I do not want to have to inject a lot of “real” money, I do my best to hold on to any Bronze 70 rated cards, and I try to make judicious use of selling cards in the auction house to help fund new Bronze (and hopefully one day, Silver) packs. Right now I am just trying to put together a decent team with 70ish rated cards. Much like that hot girl’s ass, chemistry will have to wait. And no, I never really had a chance with that girl, but I landed pretty damn well.

Happy Monday!

MUT Week One

It is obvious I suck at Madden 10 when given a serious disadvantage (i.e. a 62-64 rated team). It almost sounds contradictory saying these words (long suffering Falcons fans can relate), but there is a big difference in the 83 rated Madden 10 Falcons and subpar franchises like the Lions, Buccaneers, and Raiders. Playing with my poorly implemented GA TX Falcons collection of misfit cards is light years away from using the Atlanta Falcons.

Over the course of this week I have watched my Madden IQ plummet as the losses mounted. Saturday I finally decided enough was enough, so I took some corrective actions. First, I opted to switch to the “my skill” setting. My thinking was this would make things a little fairer since I am currently stuck in a complete swirl of suck. Second, I changed the camera angle from “standard” to the “wide” view. I am not a big fan the wide view in Madden 10; it seems too far away from the action, but on offense it does give me a better opportunity to see how the corners are playing my wide-outs. Finally, I decided to [cough, cough] buy a pack of Gold cards for $0.99.

The glory of a Gold pack made all the difference, as my team immediately improved from a 62 rating to a splendid 71. High cotton baby!

Thanks to the likes of Chris Johnson, straight away I picked up wins over the Buccaneers, Raiders, and the Bears. Technically on my first game out of the gate with my reinforced Gold lineup, I got disconnected. This sucked beyond all belief! Not only did the starters get docked a contract, but I had no opportunity to earn any coins. In other words, through no fault of my own, I got royally screwed.

By winning those games, and by making some decent coins in auction, I managed to purchase my Silver pack (1500 coins), which further supplemented my team. So for one weekend I was able to be a little bit better than dirt poor, but I am not really sitting pretty in the cat bird seat. I only have 800 or so coins, along with a mountain of cards that are about to expire in 2-4 games, including most of the players from the magnificent Gold pack, so I am going to have to make some difficult decisions.

The way I see it, I have three options. First, purchase more cards with “real” money. Second, purchase some contract cards. Third, sell enough players via auction to supplement future packs and cards.

The “real” money part is obvious. So far I have spent $0.99, and while I am not proud of the fact that I suck so bad at Madden 10 that I had to buy a bailout, it did make a huge difference in my performance.  Instead of sucking, I can actually win a game or three.  Plus I no longer want to throw a controller at the TV!

In my opinion the contract cards are not worth the coin investment because you get a contract card with the the purchase of Bronze, Silver, and Gold packs (at least I did based on my limited experience with Silver and Gold packs). I seriously doubt I will go in this direction unless I have some coins burning a hole in my pocket with a “cannot lose” this card about to expire. Besides, at the time of this article, I have two contract cards in hand.

My strategy for Bronze cards is fairly simple. These cards are fairly cheap, and very replaceable, so there is not much point in holding onto them unless they are at the top end of the Bronze scale. I have a handful of 70 rated cards; these cards are cheap to maintain from week-to-week. For the rest, I typically sell them in auction because I figure earning a few coins for a card is better than wasting the contract. Most of the Bronze cards have earned me 35-85 coins (and higher) without trying hard to really work the system, so I consider these sells nice bonus that help to supplement my incoming new packs.

Speaking of new packs, I would much rather be in a position where I am flipping Silver players and Silver packs, but I am not there yet. As cards expire, I doubt I will have the luxury of getting back to Silver pack territory (1500 coins) before I have to infuse my team with another pack of cards. As these cards leave my deck, I expect my rating to once again plummet, but such is life with MUT. These decisions are an enjoyable part of the game.

Sunday Morning Humor – PixelJunk Shooter and Bayonetta Take Center Stage

Somewhere between the Rolex 24, a second cup of coffee, and random (legitimate) internetting [damn, I thought I made that one up] I came across this PixelJunk Shooter review courtesy of Golgotron. This is hilarious; reminds me of the Sports Reviewers heydays.

Keeping with Golgotron, I figured there must be some other nuggets of goodness to be found on this site; I found this Wonder Twins team up from Sega and Playboy. Yes, I give you Bayonetta.

Push yourself past the apparent fact that the girls used for Playboy’s Bayonetta lookalike contest are straight out of the trailer park (I know it’s hard, but try). Instead, ask yourself this: Did Sega pay to have this content produced as a means of disguised advertising, or is this collaboration between Sega and Playboy a pro bono job? Comment away.

Classic! I had no idea WTF a Bayonetta was (or is, or whatever) until I found this article and quickly headed over to metacritic to check out some reviews. I always find it interesting when there is a wide discrepancy in the review scores (87 – based on 50 critic review) and user votes (7.2 – based on 36 user votes). Maybe it has something to do with pro bono jobs?

FIFA 10 Ultimate Team Feb 25

I just opened my latest propaganda email from EA, which announced the upcoming release of FIFA 10 Ultimate Team (FIFA UT) on February 10.

Coming February 25th to Xbox® LIVE & PSN!
Choose from over 7,500 players from 29 different leagues and build your squad of soccer superstars in this exciting new game mode! Once assembled, compete in dynamically updated tournaments online!

FIFA UT looks much deeper than the recent offering from Madden 10 Ultimate Team (MUT), but perhaps that is to be expected since FIFA UT will be a second generation product. The only concern I have is that the various videos only talk about online tournaments. Longtime readers know that I am not a big fan of random online opponents, but maybe FIFA UT will give me a reason to suck it up.

An additional concern is that FIFA UT is “pay to play” feature. I am already struggling to overcome my loathing of throwing real dollars at MUT, much less throwing money at an add-on feature for FIFA 10, which is being release within striking distance of 2010 FIFA World Cup. We all knew EA would go crazy this year with FIFA releases, but that is another article. My concern with the timing of the release FIFA UT is twofold. First, how long will EA support this mode? Maybe 7-8 months before this fall’s seasonal release of FIFA 11? Second, will FIFA UT have an active and enthusiastic user base considering that 2010 FIFA World Cup will be available in April?

Daily Dose of MUT – First Five Days

I am on a 2 game losing skid (Cleveland and Tampa Bay – yikes!), my team rating has dropped to 63, and my chemistry continues to plummet, typically hovering anywhere from 39-45. I am about to have 2-6 contracts expire, and I only have 397 coins in the bank.

Prior to MUT, I had not really played Madden 10 for weeks, so I am just now getting re-acclimated to the game. When I did play, it was always offline, and always with the Falcons (a low 80’ish rated team). The bottom line is that I am struggling with my 63-64 rated GA TX Falcons (pro skill level), but I am having fun.

As soon as I finish off another offline game on pro, I will once again have enough coins to pick up another Bronze pack, which will once again replenish my depleted team. My only issue here is that Silver packs are out of reach. By the time I get to 1500 coins, even with some use of the auction house, I may not be able to field a team, which makes saving for a Silver pack unreasonable.

After a week into this adventure I can so that it is possible to sustain a team without throwing real money at the game, but it begs the question – “is this really fun?”

I’ll answer my previous question by saying yes, however I wish I could earn enough coins to actually purchase a pack of Silver cards and not completely deplete my team. I could just suck it up and pay – $0.25 per Bronze pack, $0.50 per Silver pack, and $0.99 per Gold pack. All perfectly reasonable, and of course this is where EA hopes they can earn a few more dollars. In fact, I bet EA has a gold mine going thanks to MUT.

I came close to “funding” my team with real money last night, and to be perfectly honest I probably will over the weekend just so I can once again see what Madden is like with at least a 70’ish rated team.

FIFA 10 Ultimate Team

I missed out on last year’s FIFA, so my first experience with Ultimate Team was with Madden 10. I am so in love with MUT that I am really looking forward to FIFA UT, but it does suck that it is being offered as pay to play.

Test your skills as a player and manager to claim global football supremacy with FIFA 10 Ultimate Team, available to purchase for 400 Microsoft points or $4.99 as a download via Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network to FIFA 10 beginning this February, 2010. FIFA 10 and an internet connection is required for play.

I have not played FIFA 10 in months, but I am sure I will open it up this weekend to start getting familiar with the controls, play style, etc. I want to be able to hit the pitch running when UT is released in (hopefully) a few days.

U.S. Soccer Stars in the News …
It looks like Charlie Davies is on his way to making it back to the pitch in April, and hopefully to help Team U.S. to glory in this year’s World Cup.

In another bit of good news, Landon Donovan, currently on loan to Everton, picked up his first Premier League goal. It is always nice to see our boys doing well!

MUT – Will Auctions Save My Soul?

When we last met I had 18 Madden Ultimate Team (MUT) contracts ready to expire and only ~500 coins in the bank. I started judiciously working the auction house; sell, sell, sell. I managed to get enough coins to buy another Bronze pack and still have ~270 coins remaining, but this is where I made my second mistake.

Early on in this journey I wrote that I lost valuable contracts when I quit a game during halftime of the Vikings/Saints NFC Championship game. That was my first mistake; even a loss earns you some coins. If you are gaming on the cheap, and do not want to throw real money at MUT, you need to complete all games. Earning something is better than nothing, especially when you consider that you really need some return on investment for burning contracts.

My second mistake was purchasing a pack of cards that put me over the 55 player card limit. Oops! I thought I would quickly recover by putting more cards up for auction, but no dice. Those are still considered part of your collection until they are sold, which makes sense or all the rich kids would seriously game the system.

I had to make some decisions on burning 5 cards. As my dad use to say “That really burns me up!” – yes, pun intended, but have to get in a reference to my dad when talking fantasy football, which is really an aspect of MUT.

After discarding those “extra” cards, using a couple of contract cards to extend what I consider valuable players (70s are good in my book), I have managed to put together a team that is rated 64, with a chemistry rating of 59. When I play my next game I will have 8 contracts expire, which is manageable, and I have two players with cards that expire in 2 games. Once again, I consider this manageable. To protect myself a little, I took about half of those contracts that are about to expire and lowered this on the depth chart. I actually had a chemistry of 39 before I mixed things up a little, so I will probably try to drop those cards in the auction later today.

This could play out a little better over my next 2-3 games. I still do not have the luxury of buying Silver packs; 1500 coins seems way out of reach. I do have $4 or so in my PSN bank, so I may finally do the needful and procure one Silver pack, just to get in on the fun of some better players. For now I am trudging a long, still mired in mediocrity, but loving the challenge of trying to build an “ultimate” team on the cheap.

Anyone interested in the Browns Home uniforms or a Jim Zorn card? I cannot give those away at Auction!

MUT on the brink …

So it has come to this. My Madden Ultimate Team (MUT) 3-4 GA TX Falcons is set to have 18 contracts expire after my next game. That is a lot of damage control that I have to figure out how to manage, and I only have ~500 coins and one contract extension in hand.

Last night, after beating the Redskins 12-7 in a very enjoyable game that earned me 290 coins (playing on Pro), I “purchased” (with earned coins) two Bronze packs – got a couple of offensive and defensive upgrades, one duplicate (K), two contract extensions, and San Diego Chargers Stadium.

This set of 24 new cards allowed me to put up several cards for auction. A Bronze scrub 50’ish Tampa Bay DE, the duplicate Bronze Tampa Bay K, the St. Louis Rams’ stadium, and a couple of others. Hopefully I can net at least 150 coins, which would allow me to buy a contract card or would be a little over 25% of the value of a Bronze pack.

The contract cards are ridiculous. As mentioned at the outset, I have a little over 500 coins, which means I could take my chances on another Bronze pack, buy 3 150 coin contract extensions, or start working the auction house and hopefully find a few deals to fill in the gaps. MUT is rough if you are not willing to spend real cash.

At this point I think the “safe” bet, but it may take a few nights to complete, is to work the auction house. I sold a Bronze Gibran Hamdan (QB Bills) card for 20 coins. The face value was 10 coins; I probably could have done better, but it is still early days of learning the system. I am sure there are other Bronze sub-50 coin deals to be had. Following this method, I could load up on 10-12 players that I actually need, which would only force me to toss 6-8 cards. I just don’t know if I want to commit myself to spending a ton of time working auctions just to field a mediocre team, and as stated numerous times I really do not want to spend cash.

I am afraid that if I do not field a proper team, and end up with John Parker Wilson (QB Falcons) at P, WR, or FF, I am going to be completely screwed. This will quickly turn a good experience into a non starter. Let’s be honest, the game has been fun, but I just do not believe that the economies work out for those of us that are average (at best) Madden players and do not want to spend real money.

I am going to have to make a decision today to see if I should toss $5 at the game. From the standpoint of paying a monthly subscription for something like WoW, this is not a total loss. I just cannot believe that I would commit money towards virtual cards that expire after a few games. The good news is that I am once again having a ton of fun with Madden; it’s been a while.

Madden Ultimate Team Contracts

I mentioned earlier that I was not sure if cards disappeared from your deck once their contracts hit 0 games remaining. I ran across this MUT FAQ earlier this morning.

– It’s a good idea to have some Contract Extension Cards on hand when your player contracts start running low. If you have players that are down to a single game contract, the next time you exit a game they will expire.

– At that point, you’ll be asked to extend the contract before the player is removed from your team. If you are out of contract cards at that point, you’ll lose the player whose contract has expired.

That sort of makes sense; you can wait until the bitter end, but you better have enough contract extensions (of the right card type – Bronze, Silver, Gold, etc) on hand to extend anyone you want to keep around.

The FAQ also has some useful information on how team chemistry affects your overall ratings during a game.

Madden Ultimate Team Dilemma

As I write this, my GA TX Falcons are a paltry 2-4, I have ~1200 coins, and most of my original starter pack players are down to two contracts.

I did buy (with earned coins, not real money) one Bronze pack yesterday, but it was done right pathetic. The pack only amounted to two player upgrades, a d-lineman from the Carolina Panthers, and QB Josh Johnson. It is arguable that Johnson is much of an upgrade over Marc Bulger, who I received in my original starters pack. I also got a contract card, which will allow me to extend 4 Bronze players. The card will also extend some other card types, but those other types do not apply to my piss poor team!

So here I am slogging my way to my version of an “ultimate” team. I have read if you do not extend contracts, those cards “disappear” from your deck, rather than going inactive waiting to be renewed or discarded. I hope that is not the case!

At this point, without spending money, the most I can hope to accomplish is to diddle away with a 60-ish rated team. If I play two more game I will once again have enough for a Silver pack; possibly in one more game if I manage to win and get enough coins. The downside is that the vast majority of my players’ contracts will expire leaving me with a group of cards that cannot field a team.

I could buy two more Bronze packs, and hope to get some decent players that can buy me a little time on my depth chart. Based on my first experience, I doubt this route will be worthwhile, but if I get two more contract extension cards I will be able to extend around 12 cards, which means I will have a chance to continue to field a team and I will still have ~200 coins in the bank with two more games. After I play two more games, some of the contracts will expire, but I will once again have enough coins on hand to buy another Bronze pack. Hip, hip, horary! [BTW, that is sarcasm.]

Ultimate Team Ideas
Maybe if I were better at Madden 10 I would be able to earn a little more coins per game and be able to mix in a Silver pack every once in a while with my Bronze packs. That would actually be fun because my team would get a little better, and I would have a chance to get a few players that could upgrade my team and maybe even a card or two that I could flip in the auction house.  You need coins to make more coins.

Once you start, you do not get a “do over” – so if you struggle while learning the game, you are screwed. As I mentioned yesterday, I got disconnected and I decided to quit a game, which amounts to burning two (at this point) valuable contracts, and it means that I am down anywhere from 400-500 coins (or almost a Bronze pack).

It would help if Bronze cards had longer contracts, or 15-20 game contracts were included with cards from your original starter pack. Instead you start off with 10 game contracts, which does not leave any fudge factor for those of us new to the game.

It would also be nice if you could earn more points for certain statistics or milestones. Some of this compensation is already included, but it would be helpful to have more opportunities to earn more coins. Multiple sacks, interceptions, returning interceptions or kickoffs/punts for TDs, length of a play, etc. All would be opportunities to earn more coin, and the system could even be scaled to favor lower ranking teams. In other words, a 60-69 rated team would get more coins for these achievements compared to a 90+ rated team. That would help level the playing field.

Of course this is a free add-on late in Madden 10’s lifecycle. It is meant to be a cash cow (some gamers will drop a ton of money towards cards) and a proving ground for Madden 11, but it would be nice to have a few tweaks now vs. waiting for the brand new (and improved) MUT upgrade this August.

I do not care about online play, rankings, and leader boards, but I would like to have a chance to actually improve without spending real money. I think the economy of MUT may require some real money to be spent to build your foundation. I guess I will see if I crash and burn in a couple of games.

My approach will probably be to play one more game – either the Bucs or Rams, the only two teams I have beaten – and then decide if I should go with 2 Bronze packs, 3 Bronze packs, or maybe even go with a Silver pack, and spend a dollar of real money from some Bronze packs to fill out my depth charts. Lord I hope I did not just say spend real, cold hard cash.
