{"id":1123,"date":"2008-01-29T20:52:31","date_gmt":"2008-01-30T01:52:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calvertgames.com\/cgblog\/2008\/01\/29\/sony-ps3-sku-confusion\/"},"modified":"2008-01-29T20:52:31","modified_gmt":"2008-01-30T01:52:31","slug":"sony-ps3-sku-confusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.calvertgames.com\/cgblog\/2008\/01\/29\/sony-ps3-sku-confusion\/","title":{"rendered":"Sony PS3 SKU Confusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I started to post; stopped myself.\u00a0 Then decided to do it anyway.\u00a0 The entire internet is swarming with rumors about the demise of the 80GB PS3 and the interdiction of a new super, duper 120GB (or larger) PS3.\u00a0 Why should this matter?\u00a0 Why should I care?<\/p>\n<p>Actually I only care because I want to see Blu-ray succeed, and I do not want any SKU confusion to \u2026 well \u2026 confuse developers.\u00a0 Which features and extras are in and which are out?<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, for selfish reasons, I want to see Sony continue with hardware backwards compatibility.\u00a0 Once it is eradicated from current SKUs, it will be long gone and forgotten.\u00a0 There are still many PSX and PS2 games still in circulation.\u00a0 I want to be able to play these and I do not want to have to connect multiple systems to my TV.\u00a0 Besides, the PS3 (and PS2 before it) have nice options to smooth out graphics and increase disk access times.\u00a0 Keep it in Sony, even as a \u201cpremium\u201d SKU to go with a \u201cstandard\u201d SKU.\u00a0 The more PlayStation options, the better.<\/p>\n<p>How do I see things playing out?\u00a0 In order to keep costs under control, and thus sell more PS3 systems, Sony will continue pulling features (and of course pushing Blu-ray) with each new SKU.\u00a0 Sony will probably keep a higher end SKU, with a bundled game and high capacity HDD, but backwards compatibility will continue to move towards software emulation.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, the PS2 will be officially retired.\u00a0 By then, Sony will have costs under control, and realize that they can introduce a \u201cnew improved\u201d premium SKU that includes all of the PS3 60GB day one features (4 USB ports, Wi-Fi, flash card readers, and of course hardware PS2 compatibility with the Emotion Engine).\u00a0 Now that would be progress.<\/p>\n<div class=\"addtoany_share_save_container addtoany_content_bottom\"><div class=\"a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_ addtoany_list a2a_target\" id=\"wpa2a_1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.addtoany.com\/share\" onclick=\"__gaTracker('send', 'event', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.addtoany.com\/share', '');\" class=\"a2a_dd addtoany_share_save\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.calvertgames.com\/cgblog\/wp-content\/plugins\/add-to-any\/share_save_171_16.png\" width=\"171\" height=\"16\" alt=\"Share\"\/><\/a>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\nif(wpa2a)wpa2a.script_load();\n\/\/--><\/script>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I started to post; stopped myself.\u00a0 Then decided to do it anyway.\u00a0 The entire internet is swarming with rumors about the demise of the 80GB PS3 and the interdiction of a new super, duper 120GB (or larger) PS3.\u00a0 Why should this matter?\u00a0 Why should I care?
