Falcons embarrassed by Eagles

I am not going to go into a whole lot of details, but suffice it to say that this game totally sucked. Or rather the Falcons totally sucked. So did their so called fans.

Not only did the Falcons embarrass the franchise with such poor play, but the fans as a whole deserve a big WTF? I can understand cheering for Vick. I look around me each week and see plenty of his jerseys, but chants of “We want Vick! We want Vick!” were just too much to stomach. Mark Bradley of ajc.com saw things slightly differently:

No matter how it seemed on TV, Vick’s sort of homecoming commanded no consensus. He drew more boos than cheers when he made his first appearance, and even after the two touchdowns this was not — no matter how the national media might portray it — a case of every single Falcons supporter changing sides. The majority came ready to support the home team, but the home team did nothing to hold up its end.

Let’s put it this way. Vick was booed (plenty of woof-woofs too) more than cheered his first couple of appearance. When Vick scored his first TD, the stadium erupted in pure adulation. Never mind that this meant the Falcons were now down 20-0! After the Eagles when up 27-0, before the Eagles came out again on offense, the Dome was filled with “We want Vick!” chants. When Vick came in, there were mostly cheers; by this point in the game there were not enough true Falcons fans left to make any sort of difference. When Vick scored, the Dome went nuts. Clearly Vick is still an ATL favorite.

I have no problems cheering for Vick. Give him a round of applause, and be done with it. The reality was that there were more Vick fans than Falcons fans. I just don’t get it. Regardless of the player (no matter how popular), support your team, but such is the mystique (what else can I call it) of Vick, who once again captivated the Dome.

  1. Well here’s the thing..when you buy a jersey and a ticket, there is no agreement that binds you to being a fan of the team whose stadium/Dome you are going to be in to watch the game. Buying a jersey of a player is indicative that you are a fan of that particular player, not the team, otherwise you could have gotten a specialized jersey with your own name on the back or a generic jersey altogether with that team’s colors and logo. So basically, its not that you necessarily saw “Falcons” fans cheering Vick, maybe it was just Vick fans period…along with all those EAGLES FANS in attendance. I dont know why people think the “falcons” have this big fanbase. The number of people that were faithfully buying tickets before 2001 are your Falcon fans….beyond that, just be happy the games aren’t blacked out like they used to be.

  2. Lynn – Point taken about Vick fans vs. Falcons fans. As I said in the article, it is clear to me that there are plenty of Vick fans in attendance each week. It is just a damn shame that it played out the way it did because I do not think that would have happened any any other stadium.

The Falcons flat out stunk up the Dome yesterday, and there were plenty of boos to go around to show our displeasure. But when an opposing team scores, even if the the one doing the damage is a fan favorite, I just cannot justify all the cheering. It is one think to cheer for Vick, but it is another to do it at the expense of the Falcons.

Vick is a polarizing figure in the ATL area, and maybe that is the point. Or the problem. I guess there are still a lot of dividing lines when it comes to Vick supporters (or non supporters).

Yes, there were plenty of Eagles fans, but not as many as Bear fans the last two years. We (Falcons fans) managed to drawn out the Bears fans, but Vick + Eagles fans was too much to overcome. The game was pretty much out of hand by the time it was clear that the majority of fans still in attendance where Eagles/Vick fans.

I was disgusted enough yesterday with the Falcons performance to strongly consider not renewing my season tickets, which are going to be mailed out this week.

    Anyway, thanks for the comments!
