When did we start using O.O and ^_^ types of expressions? What happened to good old , or ? I missed the meeting.

I believe O.O is an expression of surprise and ^_^ is a smile. But this is what the kids are using these days.

You’ve just depressed me something rotten. I can’t work out how ^_^ is a smile, and so that must mean that aged 20, I’m officially ‘old’.
